Healthy teeth require the removal of biofilm (the sticky substance that leads to plaque buildup) at a minimum of twice per day in order to maintain healthy gums and fully calcified teeth. Brushing and flossing removes dental plaque, which if left undisturbed on the surface of the tooth, will result in decalcification and cavities. Plaque can also cause gum disease, which can lead to bone loss and eventually tooth loss. By practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with Dr. Bill at our Dallas dental office, you can help keep your smile bright and healthy for many years to come.
Brushing and Flossing
Regular brushing and flossing removes the plaque and calculus that causes dental decay and gum disease. It helps to maintain healthy teeth and gums and prevent periodontal disease, decay, bad breath, and staining/discoloration. Brush a minimum of twice daily for two full minutes, paying extra attention to the gumline and any problem areas. Floss a minimum of once daily with a c-shape with the floss that hugs the tooth for maximum removal of plaque between teeth and along the gumline. You can also use a mouthwash to help kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Decay-causing bacteria can linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Floss and mouthwash will help remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gumline.
Manual vs. Electric Toothbrush
It may not surprise you to learn that most people using a traditional toothbrush will not spend a full two minutes brushing or will spend too much time in one area and not enough time in another area. Quality electric toothbrushes have a two-minute timer and most have a 30-second quad timer to ensure the user is spending adequate time on all areas. Electric toothbrushes also clean along and under the gums better than a manual toothbrush and have pressure sensors to help avoid brushing too hard.
If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to contact Whitley Family Dental and schedule your next visit! After your hygiene appointment, you’ll receive a manual toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in a travel pouch. Carrying your electric toothbrush around with you throughout the day isn’t the most feasible option, so these tools make hygiene easier when you’re on the go!
